Ah. I see I need to read the CFT blog more often. Looks like that link to lightupbocce.com doesn't work. I'd love to go in on a set.
Better yet would be bocce balls embedded with RFID tags. You could totally automate scoring with something like that. No need to measure as the balls would "know" which is closest to the paulino. You could probably set up a wireless connection to the court/balls and keep tab of league play automatically.
I hate that the link didn't work. And, honestly, I think I'd rather play bocce with ambient light.
As for the RFID tag idea - be careful. You're very close to going over the edge into a realm of obsession you don't want to face. Did I show you the scoring sheets I used for a bocce practice game? I've never done something so pointless in my life.
